Two Arrested for Newark Stabbing, Carjacking

NEWARK, NJ – A man leaving a restaurant on Elm Street in Newark was chased down by two men, stabbed and robbed of his car cellphone. The incident happened after an altercation between the victim and the two suspects broke out inside the restaurant.

Marvin Omar Benitez-Argueta, 24, of Newark, and Miguel Granados-Cabrera, 21, of Linden, were both arrested in connection with the aggravated assault, stabbing, and two carjacking incidents that occurred on Friday.

“At approximately 2:55 a.m., a man was chased and assaulted after leaving an Elm Street restaurant by three males following a dispute inside the establishment. During the altercation, the victim was stabbed and one of the suspects stole the victim’s cell phone. The victim is reportedly in stable condition,” police said. “Detectives investigating this incident identified Benitez-Argueta and Granados-Cabrera as suspects. Both men were located at Miller Street and Avenue B on July 13, 2022. Each suspect faces charges of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, conspiracy, and robbery in this incident.”


Later that day, the two suspects committed another carjacking.

“Police also obtained a warrant for both men for a carjacking that occurred later that same day. At approximately 3:20 a.m., a man inside his parked car in the 300 block of Oliver Street was approached by Benitez-Argueta, Granados-Cabrera and another suspect. They pulled the victim out of his vehicle and stabbed him with a knife before taking his vehicle, containing his wallet and car keys. The victim was transported to University Hospital for treatment. Each suspect faces a charge of carjacking in this incident,” the department said.

The second carjacking occurred at 5 a.m. in the 200 block of Ferry Street, where a man exiting his vehicle was approached by Granados-Cabrera and another suspect. The two suspects demanded the victim’s vehicle, stabbed him with a knife, and choked him before taking his vehicle and wallet, containing $120.00 in cash, bank cards, and other personal property. The victim was transported to University Hospital for treatment of his injuries. Granados-Cabrera is charged with carjacking in connection with this incident.
