UTICA, NY – A man and a young child suffered serious injuries Wednesday night during a fireworks mishap on Rutgers Street.

According to police, at approximately 10:15 PM, Utica Police Department and Utica Fire Department personnel were dispatched to a residence on the 300 block of Rutger Street regarding two injured parties in a fireworks incident.

“Upon arrival, they located a 32-year-old male who had significant wounds to his hands and body and a three-year-old female who had wounds to her face and chest,” police reported. “Utica Fire personnel were rendering aid to both parties and both were immediately transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.”

The three-year-old’s injuries were learned to be primarily superficial burns with no major risk of permanent injury.

“The male’s injuries were far more severe and will require extensive medical treatment, but he is expected to survive,” police reported.

The department said it will not be releasing the names of the victims but that a criminal investigation has been launched. If charges are filed, the man’s name may be released at that time.
