Extreme Heat Warning in Effect at the Jersey Shore Sunday

Toms River, NJ – The National Weather Service is warning residents at the Jersey Shore of extreme heat and humidity on Sunday. As New Jersey is in the middle of a heat wave, today, the NWS said will be the most extreme day of the heat wave with high temperatures and high humidity.

“Today is expected to feature the greatest combination of heat and humidity in this stretch. Hot, humid conditions will continue into Monday however showers and thunderstorms should bring some relief. The passage of a cold front Monday night will bring more significant relief for Tuesday,” the NWS said.

Temperatures are expected to climb to near 100 degrees with heat index values up to 105 degrees by mid-afternoon.

Today’s afternoon high is expected to be 96 degrees.

The heat wave is expected to break slightly on Monday as scattered severe thunderstorms are being forecasted for inland areas of the Jersey Shore

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside,” the NWS warned this morning. “When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.”

Residents are advised to wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible.

“To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments,” the NWS said.

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.
