Oregon Library Asks For Chest Binder Donations For Gender-Affirming Closet

An Oregon library is asking for chest binders and make-up to create a gender-affirming closet for 7th through 12th grade students, according to their website.

The Driftwood Public Library in Lincoln City, Oregon, is having a “Gender Affirming Closet Donation Kickoff” on Aug. 4 to collect donations to create a gender-affirming closet at Taft Middle – High School in Lincoln City, according to the library website. The library is asking for chest binders, makeup and other accessories for transgender or non-binary kids to use in the closet which “has been in the works for several of months.”

“Many students that are transgender and/or non-binary are not supported by their parents nor can they showcase it with their daily clothing choices,” the library website states. “These students need to be able to go into the closet and take anything that they need to identify however they are comfortable within their clothing. It will also have makeup brochures and different resources that they can reach out to.”

The library created an Amazon wish list of different items they need for the closet, including a variety of chest binders, fake eyelashes and “trans tape” used for chest binding, the wishlist shows. Other donation requests include bras, boxers and makeup.

The items will be kept at the library until Taft High School is back in session and then will be donated to the school to “their forever home,” the website states.

The event will have a guest speaker, face painting, a photo booth and a silent auction, the website shows. Attendees of the event can participate in a scavenger hunt and will receive pride flags and stickers.

Schools across the country are implementing “gender-affirming closets” to “help trans students access clothing that fits their true selves.” The “It Gets Better Project,” a group working to “uplift, empower and connect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer youth,” is providing 50 grants to schools across the country for different LGBTQ projects.

The Driftwood Public Library and Taft High School did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
