Newark, DE –

The Newark police department arrested and charged a 16-year-old male after he was caught bringing a loaded gun to Newark High School on Thursday. Police Department school resource officers assigned to the school were notified of a disturbance in the building where there was a report of subjects trying to enter the school through a side entrance.

According to police, by the time they arrived at the scene, the suspect had fled but not before they were able to make a positive identification. The suspect was identified as a sixteen-year-old student who attended the school.

Police went to the home of the 16-year-old suspect based on evidence provided by Witnesses at the school.

Upon their arrival at his house, officers determined that a shooting had occurred outside the residence. The victim in the shooting had fled the scene prior to police arrival and abandoned their vehicle on Possum Park Road.

A passerby who noticed the wounded victim drove him to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Police found that the shooting at the home was related to the incident at the high school involving a possible fight between the suspect and the victim.

“Detectives determined that a female student approached another student, determined to be the victim in this case.  The female student tried to get the victim to exit the building to fight the suspect.  The suspect then approached the victim and pulled up his sweatshirt, displaying a handgun in his waistband, while threatening harm to the victim,” the Newark Police Department said in a statement.
