Op-Ed: No matter how hard Chris Christie tries, nobody cares

Robert Walker

MORRISTOWN, NJ – Since his days sitting beside the former U.S. President, Donald J. Trump as his lap dog, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has been trying to distance himself and make a name for himself once again.

From that awkward moment standing behind Trump on stage to the battle of who gave who COVID-19 during a pre-debate prep session, Christie and Trump have remained frenemies, but Christie has bigger plans.

He plans on challenging Trump again in 2024 after polling dismally in 2016.

He sorta, kinda announced he is running for president recently, but nobody really seemed to care…or notice.

Typically when such a firebrand loudmouth announces their run for president, everyone in the media pays attention because it’s good for the news cycle. Christie, for months, has tried to use his job at ABC to produce anti-Trump soundbites, but they fade faster than a bad TikTok video.

The fact is, Chris Christie is once again going to run for president, and nobody cares.

Christie was riding the wave of political success in New Jersey until he went rogue. He started attacking unions, implemented bail reform, and raised the gasoline tax. A New Jersey base that adored his in-your-face style suddenly ended up despising the man who ended his second term as the most unpopular governor in state history.

Christie has lost all credibility. The far-right thinks he’s an anti-trump traitor. The right thinks he’s insincere. Moderates are fed up with his constant bickering at nothing. The left is annoyed about his assault on their pensions. The far left will never forgive him for being Trump’s lap dog.

Christie has no political path forward is also going to be blocked by GOP infighting. He’s not even a blip on anyone’s radar.

The best move for Christie could be to keep his job at ABC and who knows, maybe earn a living at CNN or MSNBC who find value in constant bashing of conservatives and the Trump family. That could be Christie’s last calling in life.

As for his home state, few here are willing to rally behind the guy anymore.
