‘Can’t Just Wish Them Away’: Psaki, Liberal Scholar Debate What To Do With 74 Million Trump Voters

Harold Hutchison on October 14, 2022

An expert from the Brookings Institution told MSNBC’s Jen Psaki Friday morning that liberals must learn to live with 74 million “bad people” who support former President Donald Trump.

“I think we have to accept that people who we completely disagree with are sometimes going to win, so there’s, what, 74 million Trump supporters, voters? We can’t just wish them away,” Shadi Hamid, a senior fellow at the liberal think tank, told Psaki during a panel discussion. “They’re not going to disappear. So then we have to find a way to live with them even if we think they’re bad people, even if we think they’re a threat to everything we hold dear, because what is the other option that’s in front of us? That’s the challenge, because a lot of people will say, ‘Well, they’re deplorable and we can’t find a way to live with them.’”

President Joe Biden attacked Republicans in a number of speeches since the Aug. 8 Mar-a-Lago raid. He accusedRepublicans of embracing “semi-fascism” in an Aug. 25 speech at a Democratic National Committee fundraiser and declared Trump’s supporters a “threat to democracy” during a Sept. 1 speech in Philadelphia.

“It’s a universal thing, and we can talk about Europe has its own cases where in Italy we might have the first far-right prime minister since Mussolini and that person will have come to power through elections, or the Sweden Democrats, the party with neo-Nazi origins,” Hamid said earlier.

Giorgia Meloni’s party, Brothers of Italy, won 45% of the vote with its allies in September’s election. Conservative-leaning populists also performed well in Sweden’s election in September.

“So, it’s not just America, it’s happening all over the place because we’re not debating economic issues anymore, we’re debating cultural issues, identity issues, issues around religion,” Hamid said.
