Dem-Led City Tells Its Residents To Boil Water So They Can Drink Safely

Jackson, Mississippi, issued a notice advising residents to boil their water Sunday after water line breaks resulted in many residents being left with low water pressure and unsafe drinking water.

“Due to the loss of system pressure, the City of Jackson Water/Sewer Utilities Division has issued a precautionary boil water advisory until further notice for ALL SURFACE WATER CONNECTIONS,” the water advisory said. “The system has lost pressure due to breaks in the distribution system that have not been identified. Some areas may be experiencing little to no water pressure.”

City officials in Jackson, Mississippi, are working to identify the line breaks, and advised residents to continue boiling water until the issue is resolved, according to the advisory. The notices comes after Republican Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves announced a state of emergency in August over lack of adequate water supply, leading residents to later file lawsuits against the city and Democratic Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba.

“We thank you in advance for your help and understanding. We understand the timing is terrible. Please know that we hate to issue the notice during the Christmas holiday,” the city said in a statement.

The city asked residents to turn off running water Sunday while the temperature remained above freezing, and suggested residents check businesses and churches for leaks, according to CNN.

Update on our water system. There have been a number of breaks and leaks due to the drastic drop in temperature. We’re deeply grateful for the crews out on Christmas morning braving frigid temperatures and working to restore pressure to our residents. pic.twitter.com/r1MLwGpSsq

Reeves declared the state of emergency in Jackson after the city’s main water treatment facility failed and more than 180,000 residents were required to boil their water due to unsanitary conditions.

Jackson’s ongoing water supply issues led residents to file a lawsuit against the city and Lumumba in September, alleging that the defendants knowingly exposed them to unsafe water. In 2017, Lumumba campaigned on a promise that Jackson would be “the most radical city on the planet,” yet the city has continued to struggle with water and trash collection issues.

In October, Jackson lost its trash collection service after the city council refused to pay for a six month contract. The decision left nearly 150,000 residents without trash service.

Lumumba’s office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
