UN Security Council Unanimously Condemns Israel’s Settlements In The West Bank

The United Nations Security Council voted unanimously to condemn Israel’s plan to continue settling in the West Bank in an official statement, according to the Jerusalem Post.
Israel announced last week that it would be creating an additional 10,000 settlements in the West Bank as well as establishing nine police outposts. All 15 members of the Security Council, including the U.S., supported the Monday statement, according to the Jerusalem Post.
“The Security Council reiterates that continuing Israeli settlement activities are dangerously imperiling the viability of the two-State solution based on the 1967 lines,” the statement read.
U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas Greenfield told the security council that the U.S. was not supportive of Israel’s recent decision, according to the Jerusalem Post.
“We strongly oppose Israel’s announcement that it will advance thousands of settlement units and that it will retroactively legalize outputs,” Greenfield said.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he was “deeply troubled” by Israel’s decision in a state department press release last week. Blinken had also cautioned Israel against continuing construction in the West Bank when he traveled to the Middle East earlier this month.
The UEA had originally intended to attempt to pass a resolution against Israel in conjunction with the Palestinian Authority but agreed to hold the resolution after Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that there would be no more settlements after the initial construction announced last week and agreed to halt construction during the upcoming Muslim holiday of Ramadan and the Jewish holiday of Passover, according to Axios.
The UN and Greenfield did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
