NEWARK, NJ – The Newark Department of Public Safety has issued a citywide flood alert for today through Tuesday as a passing storm could dump several inches of rain across the region.

The heavy rain could produce flooding in certain low-lying and poor drainage areas of Newark.

Newark Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé said, “Due to anticipated heavy rainfall today and tomorrow, many streets may be flooded and should be avoided by drivers.”

Frage expects the rain will continue today and tonight into tomorrow with wind gusts tomorrow of up to 36 mph. A wintry mix of rain and snow is expected to begin Tuesday night after 11 p.m. Snow accumulations of less than a half inch are possible. Rain is expected to continue until early Saturday morning.

The National Weather Service is calling for a 36 hour period of rain into Tuesday night. Today light rain will begin in the morning and become heavier at night as up to three inches of rain is possible.

On Tuesday, more rain will continue to fall with a chance of sleet and snow in the evening as temperatures dip below 32 degrees.
