Governor Murphy announces commercial vehicle restrictions on New Jersey highways, state of emergency

TRENTON, NJ – The New Jersey State Police has issued a commercial travel restriction across several interstate highways in New Jersey as a nor-easter moves into the area tonight.

Wind gusts overnight could be as high as 50 mph, causing possible power outages statewide.

“We are ready for whatever comes our way in the next 36 hours,” New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said. “We’re looking at potentially significant amounts of snow in the north part of New Jersey.”


Warren, Sussex, Passaic and Bergen County have all been placed in a state of emergency by the governor.

Murphy warned residents that there is a potential for power outages as a result of the impending storm.

“Please remain mindful that while our electric utilities will restore power as quickly as possible,” Murphy said, but weather conditions could delay their response.

The travel restriction issued by Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti began at 8 p.m. Monday, March 13 and will be in place until further notice for the following highways in both directions:

  • I-78, entire length from the Pennsylvania border to I-95 (New Jersey Turnpike)
  • I-80, entire length from the Pennsylvania border to I-95 (New Jersey Turnpike)
  • I-280, entire length from I-80 to I-95 (New Jersey Turnpike)
  • I-287, entire length from NJ Route 440 to the New York State border
  • NJ Route 440, from the Outerbridge Crossing to I-287
  • The commercial vehicle travel restriction applies to:
  • All tractor trailers (exceptions as listed in the Administrative Order)
  • Empty straight CDL-weighted trucks
  • Passenger vehicles pulling trailers
  • Recreational vehicles
  • Motorcycles
  • This restriction DOES NOT apply to:
  • The New Jersey Turnpike
  • The Garden State Parkway
  • The Atlantic City Expressway
  • Public safety vehicles, sworn and civilian public safety personnel; as well as other personnel directly supporting healthcare facilities or critical infrastructure such as providing fuel or food.
