WASHINGTON, DC – Multiple volleys of gunfire rang out in D.C.’s Capitol Hill neighborhood in what many witnesses reported as resembling a scene out of a war zone. The shooting happened just a few blocks east of the U.S. Capitol building.
In the aftermath, two people were dead, found shot inside an SUV that crashed in the area the 500 block of 11th Street, near Pennsylvania Avenue.
The shooting took place at around 8:20 pm, Tasha Bryant, a spokeswoman for the D.C. Metro Police Department. Bryant said multiple gunshots were heard.
One victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
“We’re still in the early stages of our investigation at this time,” Bryant said.
No arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified. When asked how many gunshots were fired, Bryant said “multiple” were heard by nearby officers who responded.
The victims’ vehicle struck several cars before coming to a stop. Witnesses suspect the incident was a shootout between two cars in the neighborhood. Bryant could not confirm those reports.
