ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – On Friday, officers from the Atlantic City Police Department’s Patrol Division arrested 23-year-old Michael Aybar-Fernandez after a brief foot chase, recovering a loaded handgun with a high-capacity magazine and hollow point bullets. Officers Andy Nunez-Santos and Riley Flynn were patrolling the 500 block of north South Carolina Avenue when they observed Aybar-Fernandez standing in front of an apartment building. Upon seeing the officers, Aybar-Fernandez retreated into the apartment building and later exited through a window.
Officers Julian Monsalve and Atiqul Islam attempted to stop Aybar-Fernandez, who began to run. During the pursuit, officers saw Aybar-Fernandez throw the handgun onto the rooftop of a maintenance building. Aybar-Fernandez was apprehended a short distance away and placed in custody without further incident.
He faces charges of unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of hollow point ammunition, possession of a high-capacity magazine, resisting arrest, and obstruction. Aybar-Fernandez was remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility, and the public is reminded that all charges are mere allegations, with the accused considered innocent until proven guilty.
