ELIZABETH CITY, NC – A gunshot cracked the silence at the campus of Elizabeth City State University early Friday morning. In response to the shooting, the campus was placed on lockdown by campus police.

The shooting took place shortly after midnight. Fortunately, there were no injuries or reported damage.

Police are continuing their investigation and have identified a non-student as the shooter but did not release their name.

“There is a report of a gunman on campus. Avoid the area of Williams Hall and all buildings in that vicinity. Go to a safe area and take precautions or shelter in place until university police declare the area safe for normal activity. Lock doors, turn lights off, draw blinds, put cell phones on vibrate,” a campus-wide alert read.

Police determined the shooting took place in the area of Williams Hall.

The university is currently hosting Viking Fest, a week-long celebration. No plans were announced to postpone or cancel the event after the shelter in place was lifted.
