Brush fire on Parkway slows Friday evening rush

WALL TOWNSHIP, NJ – A brush fire along the Garden State Parkway in the area of Wall Township slowed traffic along the Garden State Parkway during the Friday evening rush hour.

State troopers blocked a southbound lane of traffic while the brush fire was extinguished. Rubernecking caused about a one mile backup and slowed traffic for about 30 minutes.

Luckily, the fire did not spread and was contained to a small area before being put out. The fire could have spread, but wind conditions were light. The fire was most likely started by a discarded cigarette.

Last year, a fire set along the parkway stopped traffic as the fire threatened motorists. A suspect was charged for intentionally setting that fire.

The Jersey Shore has been hit with two major fires in the past week including a 4,000 acre fire in Manchester and a 250 acre fire in Little Egg Harbor Township.
