PATERSON, NJ – A nearly six-and-a-half-hour standoff between law enforcement and a suicidal man armed with a large knife was resolved peacefully on Saturday. The Paterson Police Department and the New Jersey State Police worked in collaboration to ensure the safety of the individual and the community.

The incident began when Paterson Police Patrol Units received a 911 call from the man, who claimed to be homeless and suicidal. Officers arrived at the location near the Paterson Great Falls and observed the man wielding a large knife, appearing prepared to harm himself.

Paterson Police and New Jersey State Police negotiators, along with members of the State Police Emergency Response Team, maintained a dialogue with the man throughout the standoff. The Crisis Team from St. Joseph’s University Medical Center provided assistance as well. At around 11:26 P.M., the scene was declared safe, and the man agreed to surrender and hand over the knife.

The individual was transported to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center to receive mental health services. No criminal charges have been filed in connection with the incident, and his identity is not being disclosed due to the sensitive nature of the situation.
