Police charge ‘careless’ cook who started apartment fire that displaced two families

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ – The Gloucester Township Police Department and Chews Landing Fire Department responded to an apartment fire at Hilltop Court Apartments, located at 1302 N. Black Horse Pike in Blackwood on Sunday, at approximately 1:30 pm. Fire personnel from multiple departments quickly gained control of the fire and evacuated all residents from the “D building” of the apartments.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported.

The fire was caused by “careless cooking” after Chase Hines fell asleep while cooking, and a fire ignited in the kitchen, police reported today.


The fire caused significant damage to two Hilltop Court Apartments, resulting in the displacement of two families. The Gloucester Township Office of Emergency Management and American Red Cross New Jersey Region responded to assist the displaced residents with placement and other needs.

Chase Hines, a 30-year-old resident of the 1300 block of N. Black Horse Pike in Blackwood, was charged with 3rd Degree Criminal Mischief and has a pending court appearance.
