Trenton, NJ – An investigation led by the Mercer County Homicide Task Force and Trenton Police Department has resulted in the arrest of Rasheed Funderburg, 34, of Trenton, in connection to the shooting homicide of Daniel Garvin earlier this month. Funderburg is charged with murder and firearms offenses and was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force on Wednesday morning.

On April 14, 2023, Trenton Police received a ShotSpotter activation for six rounds in the area of 328 Rutherford Avenue at around 8:21 pm. Responding officers found Garvin, 46, of Trenton, in an area behind 332 and 330 Rutherford Avenue, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Garvin was transported to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.

The investigation revealed that Funderburg had a physical altercation with a younger male at a liquor store located at 210 Prospect Street immediately prior to the shooting. The younger male fled around the corner to Rutherford Avenue, with Funderburg and several others following him. Funderburg was seen retrieving a handgun and approaching an alleyway where the younger male had been seen running. Funderburg fired several shots down the alleyway from the street, and Garvin was struck three times as he walked through the alleyway.

Funderburg’s charges were filed by the prosecutor’s office, which has also filed a motion to detain him pending trial.

The investigation was led by lead task force Detective Elijah Phillips, and anyone with additional information is urged to contact the Mercer County Homicide Task Force at (609) 989-6406.
