Westchester DA Warns Against “Grandparent Scams” Following Arrests

Adam Devine

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY – Today, Westchester County District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah is urging residents to be vigilant against scams targeting seniors after four individuals were arrested and charged last week in separate incidents for allegedly exploiting elderly victims for money in schemes commonly known as “grandparent scams.” These scams prey on seniors by impersonating relatives or friends in need of financial assistance.

The arrested individuals include Jorge Duche, Manuel Alfonso Sosacastillo, Miguel Sosa, and Roger Mena-Carrion, all charged with crimes related to attempted or completed grand larceny.

DA Rocah provided tips to avoid falling victim to scammers, including not sharing personal information over the phone, verifying the identity of the caller, and contacting trusted family members or friends before providing any financial assistance. She emphasized the importance of reporting such incidents to law enforcement agencies, as timely reporting can increase the chances of apprehending the scammers and recovering stolen funds.
