Pedestrian in Critical Condition after Being Struck by Vehicle in Newark

NEWARK, DE – On Sunday, at around 6:15 am, Newark Police responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in the 1000-block of South College Avenue. Arriving officers found a 60-year-old male pedestrian in the northbound lanes suffering from serious injuries.

An investigation determined that the pedestrian had attempted to cross from the west side of the roadway to the east side, not using a marked crosswalk, when he was struck by a northbound 2018 Chevrolet Malibu in the right lane. The driver of the Malibu remained at the scene for police arrival.

The pedestrian was treated at the scene by New Castle County EMS paramedics and transported to a nearby hospital by an Aetna Hose Hook and Ladder Company ambulance. He was admitted to the hospital in critical condition. The northbound lanes were closed for about 2.5 hours while the crash was investigated.

The Newark Police Department Traffic Unit is still investigating the crash. Anyone with information is asked to contact Cpl. R. Vernon at (302) 366-7100 x. 3452 or rvernon@newark.de.us. Additional methods for providing information to Newark Police can be found on their tips page, where reward information may also be available.
