Pond Valley Preschool students visit Oakland police HQ to learn about safety

Oakland, NJ – The Ponds Valley Preschool took a field trip to the Oakland Police Department on Monday, May 9th, 2023, with the assistance of Officer McDermott. The tour aimed to educate the young students on essential safety precautions, including pedestrian safety, proper seatbelt and helmet usage, and the importance of dialing 911 in emergency situations.

Officer McDermott provided the preschoolers with an engaging and interactive experience by showcasing the different aspects of the police department.

The children were amazed by the different gadgets and equipment used by the officers, including police cars, communication systems, and emergency response tools.


While touring the department, Officer McDermott reminded the children about the importance of staying safe, especially when walking on the streets. The officer emphasized the need to use crosswalks and sidewalks when crossing roads and to remain vigilant at all times. McDermott also discussed the importance of wearing seatbelts and helmets while traveling in vehicles, whether in cars or on bicycles.

In addition, Officer McDermott taught the children about the significance of dialing 911 in emergencies. He encouraged the children to memorize the number and call for help whenever they encounter a dangerous situation or feel threatened.
