Suspect Indicted in shooting outside religious school

QUEENS, NY – A grand jury indicted Jeffrey Morel for attempted murder related to a shooting incident in Far Rockaway. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that Morel, 31, was arraigned Wednesday on several charges, including attempted murder in the second degree, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, and reckless endangerment in the first degree. If convicted, Morel could face up to 25 years in prison. He is due back in court on June 27, 2023.

On May 1, at around 6:58 a.m., Morel was involved in an altercation with another man, which escalated into a shootout near the Talmud Torah Siach Yitzchok school.

Surveillance footage recorded the confrontation, showing both men firing weapons at each other.

The incident resulted in bullet holes in a window of the yeshiva and several parked cars nearby. No injuries were reported. Investigations into the incident, led by the District Attorney’s Career Criminal Major Crimes Bureau, are ongoing.
