Beachwood Police Officers Honored with Life-Saving Awards for Heroic Actions in Cardiac Emergency

BEACHWOOD, NJ- In a ceremony held on Wednesday evening, Chief Glen DeMarco of the Beachwood Police Department presented officers Justin Apel and Michael Tapp with Life Saving Awards. The recognition was in appreciation of their quick response and heroic actions taken on February 12th, 2023, which ultimately saved the life of a community member experiencing a cardiac emergency.

Upon receiving the distress call, Officers Apel and Tapp wasted no time in springing into action. They immediately initiated life-saving measures, including performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and utilizing an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). With precision and determination, they delivered multiple electrical shocks using the AED while continuously administering CPR. Their relentless efforts paid off as they successfully restored a heart rhythm at the scene.

The patient, who was present during the ceremony, bore witness to the commendation and actively participated in the presentation. Thanks to the combined efforts of the Beachwood Police Department officers, Berkeley Twp EMS personnel, and RWJ paramedics, this unfortunate event concluded with a favorable outcome. The community member has since undergone medical treatment at Community Medical Center and is on the path to a full recovery.


Chief DeMarco expressed his gratitude for the unwavering commitment and teamwork displayed by all the individuals involved. The dedication and quick thinking demonstrated by Officers Apel and Tapp exemplify the highest standards of professionalism within the Beachwood Police Department.
