LONG BEACH ISLAND, NJ – After an extensive $1.3 million renovation project, Barnegat Lighthouse reopened to the public on Saturday, June 10.

The iconic structure, located on the northern tip of Long Beach Island, underwent both exterior and interior restoration to ensure its preservation for years to come.

The lighthouse will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., weather permitting, throughout the Labor Day season. Visitors will once again have the opportunity to climb the lighthouse and experience the breathtaking views of the Jersey shore that it offers.

Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette expressed his excitement, stating, “Barnegat Lighthouse is once again ready to welcome visitors who want to climb it and enjoy some of the most breathtaking views of the Jersey shore. And, for the first time in its history, the lighthouse’s views will be inclusive for all, thanks to a new video feed system, continuing Barnegat Light’s storied tradition as a community beacon.”

The extensive restoration included repairs to the exterior masonry, brick facade, and interior lantern steel platform. Roof repairs, interior painting, and the installation of new windows were also completed, ensuring the lighthouse’s structural integrity.

New cameras have been installed at the top of the lighthouse, connected to a monitor in the park’s interpretive center. This newly established video feed system allows for an ADA-accessible view, making the lighthouse’s stunning vistas accessible to all visitors. In the coming weeks, the live feed will also be accessible through the State Park Service’s website.

Assistant Commissioner for State Parks, Forests & Historic Sites, John Cecil, expressed his anticipation for the reopening, stating, “The State Park Service looks forward to the complete reopening of the lighthouse, which has been a guiding light for sailors, visitors, and families for much of its 166-year history. Visitors can now add a lighthouse climb or viewing to the many other activities available at Barnegat Lighthouse State Park, including fishing, hiking, birding, and picnicking.”

The Friends of Barnegat Lighthouse generously donated a new beacon light, enhancing the lighthouse’s visual appeal. Additionally, new security fencing and cameras were installed to ensure the safety of visitors and the preservation of this historic landmark.

Barnegat Lighthouse, listed on the New Jersey and National Register of Historic Places, has played a significant role in maritime history. Situated on the New Jersey Atlantic coastline, it served as a crucial point for ships navigating the region’s challenging currents, shifting sandbars, and offshore shoals.
