AMITYVILLE, NY – On Wednesday, a suspect was shot by Suffolk County police while attempting to evade arrest in North Amityville. The incident involved 21-year-old Jayvon Bell, who was wanted for multiple offenses including a taxi robbery on May 10 and possession of a missing loaded firearm on June 3.

At approximately 11:45 a.m., two officers were returning a prisoner to the station when they recognized Bell. After relaying a description of Bell, two additional First Precinct officers, clad in plain clothes, arrived at Bell’s location on Maple Street.

Bell attempted to flee, running into a backyard on Maple Street and vaulting over a fence. The officers pursued him, and Bell produced a firearm, firing at least one round towards an officer. In response, one officer fired back multiple times, striking Bell on the right side of his body.

Subsequently, Bell was arrested and transported to Stony Brook University Hospital. He is currently undergoing surgery for non-life threatening injuries. The officers involved were treated for tinnitus at a local hospital.
