Hacker placed racist message on Maryland electric construction sign

BROOKEVILLE, MD – Officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police’s 4th District station swiftly responded to a hate/bias incident involving an electronic sign board in a construction zone.

On Saturday, July 8, 2023, at approximately 6:47 a.m., the Montgomery County Emergency Communications Center received numerous calls reporting a sign board displaying a racist message near Brookeville Road and Georgia Avenue in Brookeville.

Upon arriving at the scene, patrol officers confirmed that the sign board, originally intended for construction safety messages, had been compromised by hackers.


Officers took immediate action to remove the offensive message and arranged for the sign to be taken down.

The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) is actively seeking any information related to this incident or any suspicious activity in the area. Individuals can provide tips by calling Crime Solvers of Montgomery County, toll-free, at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477). A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest, and callers have the option to remain anonymous.
