Chesapeake Police Remind No Golf Carts on City Streets

Leo Canega

CHESAPEAKE, VA – With the weather improving, Chesapeake City officials remind residents of the regulations surrounding the use of golf carts and utility vehicles on city streets. Except for designated areas, it is unlawful to drive these vehicles on public roads.

Designated neighborhoods are marked with signage, and private property, including private roads, are exempt from this rule. The easiest way to distinguish between a private and public road is through the street sign colors – private roads are marked with yellow background signs while public roads have blue ones.

The City of Chesapeake points residents to Virginia State Code Sections 46.2-916.2 and 46.2-916.3 for comprehensive information on the rules of golf cart and utility vehicle operation on public highways.

For those seeking to have their neighborhood designated as golf cart permitted, a multi-step approval process, including City Council approval, is required. All road laws remain applicable in these areas, including the requirement of a valid driver’s license to operate these vehicles, excluding minors.

For questions regarding the operation of golf carts and utility vehicles on City of Chesapeake roads, residents can email severette@cityofchesapeake.net.
