Nearly 1,000 Migrants Form Caravan In Mexico Bound For US

A caravan of nearly 1,000 migrants is making its way through Mexico toward the United States, according to the Associated Press.
The group of mostly Venezuelan migrants formed Saturday in southern Mexico after many had run out of money for food and had nowhere but the streets to sleep, according to the AP. The migrant caravan formed amid record immigration surges at the U.S.-Mexico border.
The group walked across a highway in Mexico with a Venezuelan flag with the words “Peace, Freedom. SOS,” according to the AP.
“We just want to move forward, to fulfill our American dream and work, because we’re all workers here,” Venezuelan migrant Roseli Gloria said, according to the AP.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recorded more than 1.6 million migrant encounters at the southern border between October 2022 and May, according to federal data.
Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has taken matters into his own hands and erected additional barriers, including a line of buoys that float along the Rio Grande River in Eagle Pass, Texas.
Additionally, Abbott deployed razor wire on certain areas of the state’s border with Mexico on land. The state’s National Guard has also had the help of authorities from 11 other Republican states.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) didn’t immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
