Police Impersonators Pulling Off Rental Scams in Newark

NEWARK, NJ – The Newark Police Division is addressing an alarming issue of individuals impersonating police officers. These imposters are reportedly showing up at homes and intimidating tenants into signing new leases with higher rents, under threat of eviction.

New Jersey state law requires landlords to secure a judgment for possession from the Superior Court following a landlord-tenant lawsuit before executing an eviction. Such an eviction order can only be implemented by an officer of the Superior Court’s special civil part.

If a landlord attempts eviction without the necessary judgment, tenants are encouraged to contact the Newark Office of Tenant Legal Services.

Should a tenant encounter someone offering money for them to relocate, or find themselves facing an illegal eviction attempt, they are urged to contact the Newark Police Division.

For reporting of any related criminal activity, individuals can reach out to the Department’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line.
