TOMS RIVER, NJ – Flooding across Toms River was reported by Ocean County Sheriff Michael Mastronardy Tuesday night. Mastronardy reported flooding at the foot of the Route 37 bridges to the barrier island, extreme flooding on Route 37 and in the downtown area.

Roads in the downtown area around where Toms River Mayor Maurice Hill wants to build a massive apartment building and a banquet hall were also flooded. Those areas are prone to extreme flooding during heavy downpours.

Last week, the town council voted to push forward on a plan for a 286-unit six-story apartment building located in the flood area.

Mastronardy urged residents to avoid traveling to Downtown Toms River.

“Flooding occurring throughout Ocean County. Toms River downtown is an area to avoid,” Mastronardy posted on Facebook. “Flooding occurring throughout Ocean County. Flooding continues at the bottom of the Mathis and Tunney Bridge in Toms River.
