EAST DENNIS, MA – In Massachusetts, the captain of a charter fishing boat had an unexpected encounter when a shark decided to snatch his catch right out of the water. Donald Parker, a Harwich Firefighter and boat captain of Prime Rate Sportfishing based in East Dennis, was in the midst of reeling in a bass when the opportunistic shark leaped out of the water and made off with the fish.
According to Parker, the shark swiftly grabbed the fish and flipped over, leaving everyone on the boat in awe at the spectacle. Undeterred by the unexpected turn of events, Parker continued to reel in what remained of his catch, only to find he was left with just the fish’s head.
The sighting of sharks in the Cape Cod area during this time of year is not uncommon, and Parker shared that such incidents happen daily in the region. With the abundance of marine life and favorable conditions, sharks often make appearances, keeping fishermen and tourists alike on their toes.
Parker estimated the shark to be a 10-foot-long great white.
Despite the adrenaline-pumping moment, Parker, an experienced captain, took the encounter in stride, understanding that such encounters are a natural part of the marine ecosystem in the area. As shark sightings continue to be frequent occurrences, locals and visitors are reminded of the importance of respecting and coexisting with these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.
