NEW YORK CITY, NY – Detectives from the New York State Police units in Liberty and Wurtsboro have launched an investigation into a spate of car thefts across Sullivan County, with a series of incidents taking place in late July.

Last Thursday, July 21, a BMW was reported missing from Falls Road in Rock Hill, later discovered abandoned at 12th Ave and West 134.

A day later, on Friday, another car, a Chevrolet Equinox was taken from State Route 42 in Forestburgh. This vehicle, which contained a purse filled with credit cards and personal items, was found abandoned and locked the next morning at the same New York location as the BMW.

Further developments occurred on Monday, when a Toyota Highlander disappeared from Youngs Road, Roscoe. This vehicle was later found at 22 Colonel Ledyard Highway, Ledyard, Connecticut, leading to the arrest of Omar Hernandez by the Ledyard Police Department. Hernandez faces a charge of Larceny 2nd degree and is being held on a $15,000 cash bond.

Also, on Sunday, Troopers attended an incident at Picadilly Circle in Rock Hill where three vehicles had been entered and items stolen, including credit cards and over $600 in cash. The affected vehicles were a 2017 Land Rover Discovery, a Honda, and a 2009 Nissan Murano.

In light of these incidents, the New York State Police have urged residents to lock their vehicles and avoid leaving any items of value within their cars.
