Scammers Using Fake Funerals to Manipulate Victims to Donate Money

ROANOKE CO., VA – Authorities in Roanoke County and throughout Southwest Virginia have identified several groups of foreign nationals involved in fraudulent activities targeting citizens. These groups have been using various deceptive tactics to defraud people in the region.

One particular tactic involves a member of these groups displaying signs in the county, claiming that their family member has passed away and requesting financial assistance for funeral expenses. However, investigations have revealed that these claims are false, and the intention behind these pleas is to manipulate citizens emotionally and gain their trust for fraudulent purposes.

As a response to these fraudulent activities, multiple members of these groups have been apprehended by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Additionally, the Roanoke County Police Department is currently pursuing charges against them.

To protect the public from falling victim to these scams, authorities strongly advise citizens to exercise caution when approached by parties providing minimal information and requesting financial aid. If there is any doubt or uncertainty about the legitimacy of such requests, it is recommended not to provide money. Instead, individuals are encouraged to contact their local police jurisdiction, who will conduct an investigation to verify the situation.

By being vigilant and reporting suspicious activities, citizens can play a crucial role in combating these fraudulent schemes and ensuring the safety of their community.
