A suspect has been arrested for allegedly threatening a California school board president following the approval of a policy that requires administrators to notify parents that their student is transgender, according to the Daily Bulletin, a California-based outlet.

Rebecca Morgan was arrested Tuesday on the suspicion that she was threatening several members of the Chino Valley Unified School Board with violence over their decision to approve a policy that requires educators to notify parents if their child wants to change their gender identity, according to the Daily Bulletin. Chino Valley Unified School Board President Sonja Shaw, who introduced the newly enacted policy, received threats at herself, her pets and her children both over the phone and by email.

The Chino Valley Unified School Board voted in July to approve a policy that requires school employees to inform parents within three days if their child wants to change their gender identity or be referred to by a different name. Shaw drafted the resolution alongside Republican state Rep. Bill Essayli who introduced similar legislation to the state House of Representatives.

Following the July vote, Shaw and board Vice President Jonathan Monroe began to receive threats via phone call, the Daily Bulletin reported. The school district and the Chino Police Department have increased security protections for Shaw.

Tension at school board meetings throughout the country has risen while attendees and board members discuss LGBTQ and diversity curricula; in June, three people were arrested after fights broke out in the middle of a California school board meeting concerning the inclusion of curriculum detailing gender identity and sexual orientation. Two people were arrested for trespassing in July after refusing to leave a Virginia school board meeting that had been over several policies, including one that would require students to use bathrooms on the basis of biological sex.

Morgan couldn’t be reached for comment and the Chino Valley Unified School District and Chino Police Department did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
