Attention K-Mart Shoppers: Last NJ Store is Closing Soon

Phil Stilton

WESTWOOD, NJ – On October 29th, the last remaining K-Mart store in New Jersey will be shutting down based on a WARN notice filed with the New Jersey Department of Labor this month. The company will let go of its remaining 28 employees in November.

This means, the final remaining Kmart store in New Jersey, located at 700 Broadway in Westwood, is slated to close its doors by November.

This Westwood location is the last of a chain that once boasted more than 2,000 stores around the United States. A location in Middlesex County closed last year, leaving the Bergen County store as the lone survivor in New Jersey. Additional closures occurred in Wayne, Trenton, Wall, Somers Point, Kearny, and Belleville between 2019 and 2021.

Sears Holdings, the parent company of Kmart and Sears, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2018 but was saved from liquidation when it was sold to investor and CEO Eddie Lambert. Lambert created Transformco to manage the business in 2019. The closure of the Westwood store will mark the end of Kmart’s presence in the Garden State.
