Chris Christie Nearly Booed Off Stage at GOP Debate

Tensions ran high at Wednesday night’s Republican presidential debate as former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie faced a chorus of boos from the audience following his criticism of former President Donald J. Trump.

The reaction began soon after Christie was introduced and grew more pronounced after his remarks concerning Trump’s conduct.

Christie stated, “Here is the bottom line. Someone’s got to stop normalizing this conduct. Whether or not you believe the criminal charges are right or wrong, the conduct is beneath the office of president of the United States.”

The situation escalated so that debate host Bret Baier had to intervene. “Let’s just get through this,” Baier pleaded with the audience, asking them to stop booing and allow the debate to continue.

The moment underscored the divisive atmosphere within the party and highlighted the challenges facing the GOP as it navigates the political landscape in the post-Trump era while Trump is still a very big part of the party.

“This is the great thing about this country,” Christie responded. “Booing is allowed, but it doesn’t change the truth.”

Trump, who was not present, responded to Christie’s treatment at the debate.

“Why is Chris Christie wasting his time?” the former president posted on Truth Social. “Look at the crowd’s reaction to him!”
