Police Gunfight With Distraught Man in Pittsburgh Caught on Video

PITTSBURGH, PA – A man facing eviction in Pittsburgh and police exchanged gunfire ending with the man being shot and killed.

A six-and-a-half-hour standoff in Pittsburgh’s Garfield neighborhood ended tragically when the individual inside a residence on the 4800 block of Broad Street was pronounced dead at the scene on Wednesday.

The incident began when Allegheny County Sheriff’s deputies were serving an eviction notice and calls were made reporting shots fired. Multiple units from every police zone in the city, Public Safety personnel from various emergency services, and local, state, and federal law enforcement partners responded to assist.


Pittsburgh Police Chief, Larry Scirotto, expressed pride in the officers’ response and highlighted the seamless communication and expert handling of the situation under dangerous circumstances. The emphasis on training and negotiation was evident, though the incident reached an unfortunate conclusion.

There were no serious injuries to Pittsburgh Public Safety or partner agency personnel.

In response to the traumatic event, City of Pittsburgh social workers and trauma support teams from the Office of Community Health & Safety will be made available in Garfield and throughout the city to ensure community members have access to necessary support services.
