Chesapeake Police Honor Fallen Deputy with Badge Draping

Chesapeake, VA – In a tribute to the ultimate sacrifice made by Norfolk County Sheriff Deputy Joseph W. Sykes, all sworn members of the Chesapeake Police Department will drape their badges on August 29, 2023, for the duration of the day.

Deputy Sykes was killed in the line of duty on August 29, 1909, on Old County Road in the City of South Norfolk. He was shot while attempting to question three suspicious men, one of whom opened fire. Deputy Sykes was transported to St. Vincent’s Hospital, where he passed away the following evening.

In an effort to continually honor those who have paid the ultimate price, the Chesapeake Police Department will make it an annual practice to drape badges on the anniversaries of officers killed in the line of duty.

The act serves as a reminder of the risks involved in maintaining a safe and secure community and pays respect to those who have lost their lives in service.

The suspect responsible for Deputy Sykes’ death was apprehended, sentenced to death, and executed on June 10, 1910. Deputy Sykes was survived by his wife and two children.
