The singer-songwriter known for hits like “Margaritaville” and “Come Monday,” passed away on Friday according to a statement from his family. The statement, posted on his website and social media accounts, confirmed he died peacefully at home, surrounded by family, friends, music, and his dogs.

Beyond music, Buffett was an entrepreneur, owning restaurant chains like Margaritaville Cafe and co-developing Cheeseburger in Paradise. He also authored several best-selling books.


Buffett is survived by his wife, Jane Slagsvol, and their three children. The family’s statement read, “He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”

Born James William Buffett on December 25, 1946, in Pascagoula, Mississippi, Jimmy Buffett grew up in Mobile, Alabama. He attended Auburn University and the University of Southern Mississippi, where he majored in history. After graduating in 1969, he moved to Nashville to pursue a career in country music.

Buffett struggled in the early years but found his niche blending country, rock, and pop to create his own subgenre often termed “Gulf and Western.” He released his debut album “Down to Earth” in 1970. Over the decades, Buffett released more than 30 albums, several of which were certified gold or platinum. Some of his other popular songs include “Come Monday,” “Fins,” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise.”
