Category 5 Hurricane Could Affect New Jersey, East Coast This Weekend

Daily Weather Report

A growing category 5 hurricane, Lee, is making a path for the U.S. East Coast north of the Bahamas and South of Bermuda this weekend. While it’s unsure where, or whether or not it will make landfall along the East Coast, the National Weather Service today announced rough ocean surf and riptides will begin forming along most of the east coast starting on Sunday.

The storm is now a dangerous category 5 hurricane and will begin impacting the Northern Leeward Islands with rough surf conditions starting later today as it heads northwest.

“It’s way too soon to know what level of impacts, if any, Lee might have along the U.S. East Coast or Bermuda late next week,” the NWS said.

The NWS said the storm is also expected to lose strength and slow down as it enters the southwestern Atlantic Ocean.

At its current location, Lee does not pose an immediate threat to any coastal areas and no coastal warnings have been issued.

Lee is packing sustained wind speeds of up to 165 miles per hour and is moving west-northwesterly at 14 mph. It is currently several hundred miles east of Purerto Rico.
