Newark Police Seek Suspects in Distraction Robbery

by Charlie Dwyer

NEWARK, NJ – Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying two suspects who stole $500 from the cash register of a local discount store while distracting an employee.

On September 13, at around 8:10 p.m., police responded to Wilson Dollar Deals located in the 100 block of Wilson Avenue. Surveillance footage shows that one suspect engaged the store employee in conversation, allowing another suspect to go behind the counter and take the money. Both suspects left the scene, heading west on Wilson Avenue toward Napoleon Street.

Suspect #1 is described as a Black male wearing a short-sleeve T-shirt, black pants, and a sky-blue bucket hat. Suspect #2 is described as either a Black or Latino male wearing a black long-sleeve shirt, purple basketball shorts, and black Nike sandals.

Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé urges anyone with information about the suspects to call the Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477).
