Weekend Tropical Storm to Dump Rain, Wind and Coastal Flooding at the New Jersey Shore

TOMS RIVER, NJ – As the Jersey Shore prepares for an impending tropical storm, multiple advisories have been issued for the area. Today’s forecast is partly sunny with a high near 72 and an east wind blowing at 10 to 15 mph. By Friday night, rain is likely to set in, mainly after 3 AM, with a low around 59. East winds will pick up to 15 to 20 mph and there is a 70% chance of precipitation. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch are possible.

A Wind Advisory is in effect from 6 AM to 8 PM EDT on Saturday. The advisory warns residents of northeast winds ranging from 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph. The advisory covers Western Monmouth, Eastern Monmouth, Ocean, Atlantic, Cape May, and Southeastern Burlington. These conditions could lead to unsecured objects being blown around and may result in downed tree limbs and possible power outages. Motorists, especially those driving high-profile vehicles, are advised to exercise extra caution.

Additionally, a Coastal Flood Watch has been declared from Saturday afternoon through Saturday evening for Ocean and Southeastern Burlington counties. The watch warns of potential inundation of one to two feet above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Widespread roadway flooding is expected, and some vulnerable structures may begin to incur damage.


Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday’s forecast includes rain and possibly a thunderstorm after 9 AM, with some storms capable of producing heavy rainfall. The high will be near 68 with a northeast wind around 25 mph, gusting as high as 45 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90% with new rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

For Saturday night, rain and possibly a thunderstorm are expected, mainly before 3 AM, followed by likely showers. Conditions will be windy, with a low around 61 and a northeast wind blowing at 25 to 30 mph. The chance of precipitation is 80%.

On Sunday, showers are likely before 9 AM, followed by a chance for intermittent showers and thunderstorms for the remainder of the day. The high will be near 69 with breezy conditions. The chance of precipitation is 60%.

Residents are advised to heed all advisories and take necessary precautions, such as securing outdoor objects and preparing for potential flooding.
