US Border Patrol

NEWARK, NJ. -On September 21, 2023, U. S. Customs and Border Protection at the Port of New York/Newark seized seven outbound stolen vehicles bringing their total for fiscal year 2023 to 365 recovered stolen vehicles, one for each day of the fiscal year, and it isn’t over yet.  CBP has worked with Homeland Security Investigations – led Newark Auto Export Crimes Task Force and the Hudson County Sheriff’s Department, without whose help this record achievement would not be possible.

Recovered Outbound Stolen Vehicle

These latest seven vehicles recovered on September 21, were destined to Western African countries, with an estimated value of $395,967.  That brings the overall value of the 365 vehicles recovered so far this year to an astounding $21,035,930.

“When law enforcement partners together and shares their expertise, it acts as a force multiplier against these complex, international criminal organizations,” said Francis J. Russo, Director New York Field Operations. “Our continued diligence and determination in dismantling these dangerous transnational criminal organizations by using a multi-pronged approach, disrupts these illegal organizations and causes them financial pain while protecting our community.”

“This is truly an amazing accomplishment by our highly motivated CBP officers. Working alongside HSI-BEST and the Hudson County Sheriff’s Department, they were able to establish this new record for recovered outbound stolen vehicles here at the Port of New York/Newark.” said TenaVel T. Thomas, CBP Port Director, Port of New York/Newark. “Using a multi-layered enforcement strategy that combines intelligence gathering, x-ray technology and on the ground expertise, we have successfully recovered one stolen car a day for the entire fiscal year and the year isn’t over yet!”
