Aberdeen Advises Residents to Prepare Ahead of Tropical Storm Ophelia

Daily Weather Report

ABERDEEN, NJ – A coastal storm is forecast to affect the region this weekend, bringing with it the potential for significant weather impacts, particularly along the coast. The storm is expected to start on Friday night and last through Sunday.

The Aberdeen Police Department has released the following update regarding the storm and its potential local impact:

  1. Coastal regions are likely to experience the most significant impacts on Saturday, with coastal flooding and strong winds forecast, along with periods of heavy rain.
  2. While uncertainty remains about exact water levels, most areas along the New Jersey and Delaware coasts are expected to see at least minor coastal flooding. Some areas, especially in southern New Jersey and southern Delaware, may experience moderate coastal flooding. The highest risk for flooding will likely be during the Saturday afternoon high tide, around 2-3 p.m.
  3. Strong onshore winds are expected on Saturday with gusts up to 50 mph near the coast and up to 40 mph inland. A Gale Watch is in effect for ocean waters, and a Wind Advisory may be issued for land areas near the coast. The winds, combined with coastal flooding, could result in minor beach erosion and dangerous rip currents.
  4. Heavy rainfall is expected from Friday night into Sunday. Depending on the storm’s track, some areas may receive over 2-3 inches of rain. Areas northwest of I-95 are expected to receive less than 2 inches. Alongside coastal flooding, the rain could cause occasional urban and small-stream flooding.
  5. There is a possibility that the system may acquire tropical characteristics and become a named storm, although this remains uncertain. Regardless, the overall impact on the area is expected to be similar.
