New COVID-19 Booster Available, President Biden Says: This One Works

TRENTON, NJ – President Joe Biden’s recent comment about a new COVID-19 vaccine has spurred speculation about future vaccine mandates, particularly in states like New Jersey with a history of strict requirements.

During a Lake Tahoe vacation stop earlier this month, Biden mentioned that he is asking Congress for funding for a new COVID-19 vaccine. His assertion that the vaccine “works” raised questions about the efficacy of existing vaccines.

When questioned about the newly approved boosters, Biden said, “Yes, I can. Matter of fact, I signed off this morning on a proposal we have to present to Congress. I request additional funding for new vaccine…and it works.”

The President’s comments suggest that everyone may be “recommended” to get the new vaccine, irrespective of prior vaccination.

This recommendation resonates in New Jersey, a state that previously implemented vaccine mandates and even terminated state employees for non-compliance.

If a new outbreak occurs, it is likely that Governor Phil Murphy could enforce another round of COVID-19 mandates for schools, businesses, and public workplaces. So far, though, so good. Although there has been a slight increase in cases, it is not in the area of concern for a new wave of the pandemic.

CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older get an updated COVID-19 vaccine to protect against the potentially serious outcomes of COVID-19 illness this fall and winter. Updated COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna will be available later this week.

Vaccination remains the best protection against COVID-19-related hospitalization and death. Vaccination also reduces your chance of suffering the effects of Long COVID, which can develop during or following acute infection and last for an extended duration.  If you have not received a COVID-19 vaccine in the past 2 months, get an updated COVID-19 vaccine  to protect yourself this fall and winter.
