A Survival Guide for Opposing Team Fans at a Philadelphia Flyers Game

Ryan Dickinson

Philadelphia, PA – Hockey season is about to start and one thing hockey fans in the tri-state are know is that seeing a Philadelphia Flyers game at Wells Fargo Center can be somewhat intimidating.

Let’s say this first. If you are respectful of the fans and don’t get out of hand, you won’t have a problem. If you create a problem, most of the time, at a Flyers game, that problem will find you.

Now, first, we’re not going to tell you not to wear your team’s jersey or colors, but if you do, don’t get uptight or take it personally when random people poke fun at you pretty much wherever you go.

Most fans are considerate, but it’s Philadelphia, you’re going to get your share of ribbing. Take it in stride. Also, if your team happens to be the New Jersey Devils, Boston Bruins, or New York Rangers, tread lightly.

Now, we’re not saying the experience is without risk, but for the most part, it’s quite okay. One thing we don’t suggest is climbing a greased-up utility pole after the game if your team comes out the winner.

Here are some more good tips:

Dress Wisely, But Be Proud

  • Represent Your Team: It’s natural to want to wear your team’s jersey. Go ahead, but be prepared for some playful jabs from Flyers fans.
  • Be Respectful: Make sure to avoid any attire that could be seen as provocative or disrespectful to the home team or its fans.

Know When to Cheer

  • Choose Your Moments: It’s natural to cheer when your team scores or makes a great play. However, be mindful of the people around you and try not to go overboard.
  • Be Considerate: The Flyers crowd is passionate. Respect that enthusiasm when you’re in their home arena.

Keep the Banter Friendly

  • Friendly Rivalry: A bit of trash talk can be part of the fun, but keep it light-hearted and know when to stop.
  • Be Sportsmanlike: Acknowledge good plays by both teams. Sometimes a simple nod can go a long way in showing you’re a fan of the game, not just your team.
