Two Lake Charles Men Sentenced for Illegal Firearm Possession

LAKE CHARLES, LA – Gregory Dewayne McCummings, 34, and Melvin Blake, Jr., 30, both of Lake Charles, were sentenced today for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, according to United States Attorney Brandon B. Brown.

United States District Judge James D. Cain, Jr. sentenced McCummings to 24 months in prison with 3 years of supervised release, giving him credit for time served. McCummings was found with a loaded firearm and various controlled substances during a traffic stop by the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office. He has a prior felony conviction and is prohibited from possessing firearms.

Blake received a 21-month prison sentence, followed by 3 years of supervised release, also with credit for time served. He was found with a 9mm semi-automatic pistol during a permitted search of a residence. Blake also has a prior felony conviction and is prohibited from owning firearms.


The cases were investigated by the ATF and the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office. Prosecution was handled by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel J. McCoy.

Both cases are part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime through collaborative efforts between various levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve.
