New Jersey is the State People Love to Hate, but We Still Love it

Phil Stilton

New Jersey often gets a bad rap in popular culture. From being dubbed “The Armpit of America” to countless jokes on TV shows, the state has its fair share of detractors.

There’s a thing about New Jersey, only we can trash-talk our state. We’re the first to point out the bad in New Jersey, and we can say all we want about it, but it stops there.

Out-of-state visitors aren’t allowed to trash the Garden State, at least not when we’re around. That also goes for running into a Jersey hater when traveling or on vacation.

Yet, many residents and visitors have a deep affection for the Garden State. Here are five reasons why people love New Jersey, irrespective of the stereotypes:

Diverse Landscapes: From the sandy shores of the Jersey Shore to the picturesque Appalachian Trail, New Jersey offers an array of natural beauties. The Pine Barrens, an extensive forested area, provides a serene escape, while the many state parks beckon outdoor enthusiasts.

Rich History: New Jersey has been pivotal in the nation’s history. Battles fought here shaped the outcome of the Revolutionary War. Towns like Princeton and Morristown are steeped in history and offer a glimpse into the nation’s past.

Cultural Melting Pot: The state’s proximity to major cities like New York and Philadelphia makes it a hub for various cultures. This diversity is reflected in its festivals, food, and neighborhoods. From the Indian markets of Edison to the Portuguese eateries of Newark, there’s something for everyone.

Proximity to Major Cities: One of New Jersey’s advantages is its strategic location. Whether it’s a Broadway show in New York or a historic tour in Philadelphia, residents are just a short drive or train ride away from some of the country’s major attractions.

Local Pride: Ask any New Jerseyan, and they’ll likely have a list of local haunts and hidden gems that they swear by. Whether it’s a favorite diner, beach, or hiking spot, residents have a deep-seated pride in their local communities.

In conclusion, while stereotypes persist, New Jersey’s appeal is undeniable to those who take the time to explore its diverse landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture. Like any place, it’s the personal experiences and connections that truly define it.
