SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY – The Suffolk County Police Department has unveiled its new initiative, the Precinct Level Advisory Boards (PLABs), aimed at enhancing the connection between the police force and the community. The introduction of PLABs is in line with the department’s goal to improve communication and relationships with residents. These advisory boards will be populated by volunteer community leaders of varied backgrounds, who will act as mediators for their designated precincts.

Eligibility criteria for individuals interested in joining a PLAB encompass a variety of prerequisites. They must demonstrate a sincere interest in their community’s welfare, show a commitment to working in tandem with community representatives and precinct officers, and have resided in the precinct for a minimum of three years before applying. Additionally, they should be willing to engage in quarterly meetings and take on the related duties, and have a robust network in the community, with a focus on those impacted by police interactions.

The council’s membership guidelines specify that candidates should hold a leadership position in a community organization within the precinct, manage or own a business based in the precinct, and be at least 16 years old when appointed. Representation from precinct-based school districts is also a requirement. Candidates can submit their applications to their precinct’s Inspector for evaluation.

It’s worth noting that full-time employees of the Suffolk County Police Department, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, or Class Counsel are ineligible to join. The same restriction applies to elected or government-appointed officials. Each PLAB is designed to have a roster of eight to twelve members, with each individual serving a tenure of two years. Any given member can serve up to three consecutive terms.

After discussions with a delegate from the Police Commissioner’s office, the final decisions on PLAB member appointments will be made by the Commanding Officer.

For those eager to contribute, the deadline for submitting their names to their precinct Inspector is set for October 15. Comprehensive details on this initiative can be accessed on the official website of the police department.
