TRENTON, NJ – Today is National Coming Out Day. It is a day observed to promote awareness and support for the LGBTQ community. The annual occasion honors individuals who openly identify as bisexual, gay, lesbian, or transgender, viewing their declaration of sexual orientation or gender identity as a significant cultural moment.

Approximately half of all Americans know someone who identifies as gay or lesbian, while one in ten is acquainted with a transgender individual.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy took a victory lap today, touting his successes on the matter in the Garden State.

“10 years ago, the courts legalized same-sex marriage in New Jersey. In 2022, we codified marriage equality into law to permanently protect LGBTQ+ couples from discrimination,” the Governor said.

The primary aim of the day is to elevate the civil rights of the LGBTQ community. Through education, support, and personal narratives, the initiative strives for a society where they can live openly and securely. As more members of the LGBTQ community reveal their identities, it fosters better understanding and increased support among their acquaintances and the broader public.

According to the Street, New Jersey is ranked sixth nationally when it comes to states with the most LGBTQ rights and equality. That has been helped by Governor Murphy’s inclusivity and equity-based social agenda and platform.
